Herod the Great was the ambitious king of the Jews, who constructed the second temple in Jersusalem and many other great structures throughout the Holy land.  A strong supporter of Rome, Herod was respected and rewarded by Marc Antony and Augustus.  Although despised by the people of Judaea, his death in 4 BC was mourned by Augustus.
