B.C. #2 Mint Block of 16, U.S. 24c flty Mint Pair, ex Wellburn & O’Reilly

Lot 73 with an estimate of $4,000 is the original material reproduced on page 53 of Gerald Wellburn “The Stamps & Postal History of Vancouver Island & British Columbia 1849-1871. It shows the second largest multiple of British Columbia’s first issued stamp in the Gerald E. Wellburn collection.
It comes with a faulty pair of mint, original gum United States 24c Washington stamps, which were originally sold at the Victoria Post Office to prepay letters to the United Kingdom. The mint original gum 1860 2.5c block of sixteen was found in Peter O’Reilly’s archives in the 1940s.
