U.K. Issues Beatles Stamps

Back to Newsletter index

The United Kingdom issued a 10 stamp set devoted to the Beatles on January 9, 2007. The tribute stamps mark the first meeting of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, in a Liverpool Church, way back in 1957. It used to be controversial to feature living people, other than Monarchs, on stamps, but few could argue that the Beatles are popular music royalty who deserve stamp recognition, especially from their home nation. Unfortunately, neither John Lennon, nor George Harrison lived to see this series.

Beatles stampsThe six stamp set of self adhesives, designed by Johnson Banks, show stacks of classic Beatles album covers, in se-tenant pairs. The first class (32p) duo features With the Beatles, and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The 64p, European airmail rate, pair shows Abbey Road and Help!. The 72p, international airmail rate, pairing bear likenesses of Revolver and Let it Be.

The four stamp, gummed souvenir sheet is comprised of 1st class, undenominated stamps showing vintage Beatles memorabilia, including

a toy guitar, a Yellow Submarine lunchbox, their first single Love Me Do, and a tea tray. Pinback badges of the four members also appear on three of the stamps, and the souvenir sheet background includes a harmonica and other souvenir items.

Kevin Summers photographed the design items on the Beatles stamps and they were produced with the cooperation of Apple Corps, the Beatles company. There is a contest going on in the stamp world to see what will be the best selling, and best loved stamp issue. Previous favourites include United States issues for Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe, and the U.K.. tribute to Princess Diana. It will be interesting to see if the Beatles stamps similarly capture the strong interest of collectors and fans. Stamp Beatlemania anyone?
