Flanked by members of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, officials from the Royal Canadian Mint and Canada Post today officially unveiled a commemorative coin and stamp set that pays tribute to the famous Snowbirds at the Ottawa International Airport. In a symbolic gesture, the Mint and Canada Post also presented the 431 Squadron with a set whose Certificate of Authenticity bears the number 00431.

Presented days before Canada Day where the Snowbirds will once again thrill thousands on-site and millions watching on television, and marking the famous team's 35th anniversary celebrated last year, the commemorative set includes four stamps and one coin. One set of stamps is a souvenir sheet cancelled with the Snowbirds coat of arms, the other two are a mint pair.

Canadian SnowbirdsThe first stamp puts us right in the cockpit and provides a first-hand view of the Snowbirds in flight from a pilot's perspective. The second stamp illustrates one of the team's hallmark formations and combines a stunning background with transparent effects to create a spectacular image that captures the excitement of the Snowbirds in action. Both stamps are issued by Canada Post.

Canadiann SnowbirdsProduced by the Royal Canadian Mint, the 99.99% pure silver five-dollar coin echoes the designs of the two Snowbirds stamps. The images are superimposed on the coin using an innovative photographic holography technique, thus creating a double-hologram of breathtaking beauty. Tilting the coin whichever way reveals either the pilot or the aircraft in formation.

"This magnificent set featuring the world-renowned Snowbirds, proud ambassadors for Canada, is a unique collector's item for anyone seeking an exclusive keepsake honouring one of the world's premier aerial demonstration teams and a cherished Canadian icon," Nancy Cogger, Vice-President Marketing and Sales of the Royal Canadian Mint.

"Canadian stamps, like our country's coins, play an important role in reminding us all of how much Canada has to be proud of.

Whether they celebrate our incredible natural resources, our accomplished citizens or our traditions and history, these stamps and coins define what it is to be Canadian," said Manon Tardif General Manager Regulatory Affairs at Canada Post. "This new stamp issue and coin are the perfect showcase for the pride we feel for our Snowbirds and the role they play in fostering international Canadian goodwill."

With their aerial acrobatics of loops, rolls and awe-inspiring formations, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds are arguably the world's pre-eminent aerial demonstration squadron. Their nine distinctive red and white aircraft - often flying with wing tips about four feet (1.2 metres) apart - dazzle millions of spectators each year with their displays of perfection in formation aerobatic flight.

The only team in North America to fly with nine jets in close formation, the Snowbirds perform more than 50 different dynamic, precise and exciting formations during their acclaimed shows, including the Canada Goose, the Maple Leaf and the Double Diamond, which is the tightest flown, fastest rolled, and most agile formation in the Snowbirds' repertoire. Around the world, the Snowbirds' precision, agility and expertise in these remarkable aerobatic manoeuvres are legendary and have captivated spectators and inspired millions the world over.
