About two weeks ago the 13th Edition (2001) of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Government Paper Money hit the stores for sale. It is published by the Charlton Press and has 305 pages. The cover shot chosen is of a 1912 $5 Dominion of Canada note and the Nova Scotia steam train found thereon, continuing the theme of featuring rare and popular notes on the cover each year. The book contains many updates of interest to the collector/dealer. |

The book appears to have expanded identification and pricing references for the replacement notes. These are now a closed series and were always popular. Some of the more readily available replacement notes are now being collected by prefix as well as by type and the expanded listings reflect the desire of the collector to have access to pricing and availability information for each one. Of course, the established rarities in this set have had their pricing information updated. |

Of never before seen interest is the inauguration of standard listings for Canadian specimen notes made publicly available through auction by the Bank of Canada. Although this first listing of these notes accurately describes the notes features and quantities available, the pricing mostly reflects the auction hammer prices. Many of the notes are trading at values substantially beyond the original hammer prices, some by double or more, so valuations should be viewed as a snapshot of the emerging market and a place from which to begin your negotiations. The exception to this is the listings for multicoloured series notes which appear to be closest of all to current market rates. I expect that by the time the 14th edition is released, the market prices will be more settled and reflected thusly in the listings. 1986 Birds of Canada specimen notes are not included as the auction for those was too late for listings to be included in this edition. |

Much expanded break downs and listings of the various types of error notes and special serial number notes has been included, notably in the field of radar notes. In general, of course prices have been updated. The font used is at times somewhat small, and the numeral "4" appears to be damaged throughout the book. Still, such a comment is academic put next to the unmatched information and detail this book provides. Priced at $19.95, I feel you would be hard pressed to spend your money any better than on a copy of this book. |
