Susanna Blunt Designs a New Coin

Back to Newsletter index

Heads She Wins, Tails She Wins

Vancouver artist Susanna Blunt, whose new crownless portrait of the Queen already graces all of Canada’s coins, has gone over to the other side and designed the tails side of a new coin also. The 2005 $20 Pure Silver coin, celebrating Pacific Rim National Park, bears Blunt’s design of a lush, dense West Coast rain forest scene fronted by an eagle catching a salmon.

Blunt, perhaps better known for her portraits of Royalty and important personages, has created a design that should appeal to collectors of coins depicting birds, fish, British Columbia, and trees.

My first thought on seeing the coin is that it would appeal to fantasy buffs, and fans of Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings. Of course, Pacific Rim National Park is fantastic and hopefully will become better known as a result of the Royal Canadian Mint’s new coin.

The Pacific Rim National Park silver coin, issued in proof quality, in a limited mintage of 20,000 pieces, is available from coin dealers and the Royal Canadian Mint. Made only for collectors, it is non circulating legal tender. We sold our first one to one of our employees who is a fishing buff. Susanna Blunt appeared at the recent Terry Fox dollar launch in Vancouver.

Will the Mint launch this coin here or on the coast? Susanna carries a poke of pennies to give as mementos to fans of her Queen’s portrait design. We hope she is having fun with this one too.
