Summer Roundup |
The Summer is passing quickly in Vancouver as it always does. Summer highlights include the C.N.A. Coin Show here. Dealers reported great buying and selling. We attended Michael Walsh's outstanding Doug Mason Collection Coin Auction, but only bought three pieces, an incredible 1943 Fifty Cents, and the two best known 1917 and 1919 Canadian Gold Sovereigns. We enjoyed seeing and meeting some of our out of town dealer friends at the C.N.A. Show. Like many attendees, we only wished we had more money and time to spend there. Got a kick out of seeing a genuine Bank of Vancouver $5 banknote on display at the show. Missed the B.C. Gold coins, but I am told they are on display at the Provincial Museum. David and I, and our families, made it to a Golden Jubilee Mint Tea reception in Victoria. I owed some money to a Victoria dealer who had been consigning to our auctions, so it was a good excuse to pay them a visit as well. |

The Mint put on a good show and it was well promoted, and thus well attended. The new Golden Jubilee 50c coin is proving popular with the public, largely because of the Mint's advertising. It is not circulating successfully, so we are able to sell the coins steadily at the shop. We have not been able to obtain any of the new, and little known, commemorative quarters though. Note the colourised version of these is rising slightly already. The Mint's colourised Spring/Summer Maple Leaf sold out fast, as did the Post Office's Catholic Youth Conference First Day Cover, which bore a picture of the Pope. |

The important September to December selling season is upon us. We are looking for quality consignments for sale in our auctions. Key coins are very saleable at the moment and we need many items for our retail stocks. If you have been buying non government issued Canadian banknotes, you will be pleased to discover that prices are well up in the newly released Charlton Canadian Banknote Catalogue, which we carry in both our locations, and offer online. There are two local shows soon. The North Shore Numismatic Society Coin and Banknote Show is September 5-7 at the North Vancouver Rec Centre. The PIPEX Stamp Show, includes exhibits, and is on the September 22nd weekend at the Richmond Inn. See you there. |
