Canada Celebrates Q.E.II Golden Jubilee with 48c Commemorative Stamp.

Canada Post marks the 50th Anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth the Second with a 48c commemorative stamp, available 2 January 2002 at Canadian Post Offices. The 2002 dated first issue of the new year bears a contemporary portrait of the Queen, wearing her Canadian decorations, at right, and a burnt orange stylized maple leaf, incorporating smaller maple leaves, at left. The design is set against a gold background with white lettering saying Canada 48 Golden Jubilee 50 ans de regne.

the 50th Anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth the SecondThe Queen's crown overlaps into the white background at the top of the stamp. Printed in sheets of 16, by Ashton Potter, with colour circles and C imprints in the four corners, the minisheets include alternating gold stylized maple leaves in the vertical margins, plus a new feature, a black bar code in the bottom right margin.

Canada Post says there will be no Queen Elizabeth definitive issue in 2002.

Our present Queen first appearwed on a Canadian stamp as a princess. Her portrait graced the 1c green stamp, Scott #211, issued 4 May 1935 to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V.

Queen Victoria marked her Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and was honoured with a long set of stamps, modelled after the U.S. Columbian issues. Can Queen Elizabeth equal or better Victoria's long reign? While Canada Post issed a number of Royal Wedding, and Royal Visit commemoratives between 1939 and 1977, bearing the Princess or Queen's likeness, definitive issues were released by Canada and Newfoundland from 1932 to 2000.

It is expected that other world nations will mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee with commemorative stamp issues as well. Cheekily Canada Post has chosen this issue to launch their new domestic postal rate increase. U.S. and international rates will rise as well.

God Save the Queen.
