Vote on Your Favourite Top 10 Canadian Olympic Winter Moments

Back to Newsletter index

The Royal Canadian Mint and Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium are inviting Canadians to celebrate the rich and storied history of the Olympic Winter Games by voting on the Top 10 Canadian Olympic Winter Moments of all time for a chance to win one of two trips for two to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The Top 3 moments will be featured on 25-cent coins, each with a mintage of 22 million, and will enter into circulation in the fall of 2009, leading up to Vancouver 2010. The results of the Top 10 Canadian Olympic Winter Moments will be revealed in a one-hour prime-time broadcast special, in English and French, in September 2009 on CTV, TSN and RDS.

"Whether they recently witnessed it in real-time or read about it decades later, Canadians from coast to coast can recall that special moment in our country's winter sports history that instilled a sense of pride like no other," said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "We're proud to give Canadians the opportunity to determine the most extraordinary Olympic Winter Games moments to complete our Vancouver 2010 circulation coin program."

"Canadian Olympic athletes have the profound ability to make an emotional connection with fans and instill a tremendous amount of national pride. Their stories are awe inspiring and their accomplishments are exceptional. We celebrate and pay tribute to Canada's Olympic heroes who have helped shape the Olympic Winter Games for Canadians nationwide," said Keith Pelley, President, Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.

Voting for the Top 10 Canadian Olympic Winter Moments begins today (February 12) and runs through March 25 at CTVOlympics.ca & RDSolympiques.ca. Canadians are encouraged to cast their votes and rank their favourite moments, while also sharing their memories about each moment. A random draw will take place in early April to determine two winners, each of whom will each receive a trip for two to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The Top 10 Canadian Olympic Winter Moments finalists, as selected by an independent voting panel are:

Nancy Greene - gold medal and silver medal, alpine skiing, Grenoble 1968.

Nancy Greene Raine is a champion. She stands for what is good about growing up Canadian and successfully taking on the world. During her amazing ski career, she won 17 Canadian championship titles, three U.S. championship titles, 13 World Cup races, two overall World Cup championships and Olympic Gold and Silver medals.

Gaétan Boucher - two gold medals and one silver medal,
speed skating, Sarajevo 1984.

A four-time Olympic medalist, Boucher was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's outstanding male athlete of 1984. He was named number 10 on the list of Canada's Athletes of the 20th Century. In 1983, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada and was promoted to Officer in 1984. In 1985, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec.

Marc Gagnon - gold medal, short track speed skating,
Salt Lake City, 2002.

Winning a total of five medals in three consecutive Winter Games made him the most decorated Canadian athlete in Winter Olympic history until 2006.

Catriona Le May Doan - gold medal, speed skating,
Salt Lake City 2002.

She won 500-metre gold medal at the Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. She also won the world sprint and World Cup titles in the 500 metres
and she went 20 races without a loss.

Men's Hockey Team - gold medal, Salt Lake City 2002

Canada's pursuit of the gold medal mesmerized Canadians, with the CBC predicting the afternoon game would draw the largest TV audience in the nation's history -- not just for sports, but for any event.

Women's Hockey Team - gold medal,
Salt Lake City 2002.

Despite losing all eight exhibition meetings in the past year by a combined score of 31-13, Team Canada beat Team USA when it mattered most, 3-2 in the gold medal game at the Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games.

Jamie Salé and David Pelletier - gold medal, figure skating, Salt Lake City 2002.

They were the first Canadian pair to win Worlds since Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler in 1993, and the first pair to win at a Worlds held in Canada since Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini in 1984. They would later win the Lou Marsh Trophy as outstanding Canadian athlete in 2001.

Their Olympic Gold was the first for Canada since 1960.

Beckie Scott - gold medal, cross-country skiing,
Salt Lake City 2002

She was the first Canadian and first North American woman to win an Olympic medal in cross-country skiing.

Cindy Klassen - one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals, speed skating, Turin 2006

Klassen became the first Canadian to win five medals in one Olympic Games. Her winning the largest number of medals at the Turin Olympics caused IOC president Jacques Rogge to call her the "woman of the games."

Clara Hughes - gold medal, speed skating,
Turin 2006

She is both a cyclist and speed skater, and has won multiple Olympic medals in both sports. That makes her one of the few athletes to medal at both the Summer and Winter Games of the Olympics.
