Vancouver 2010 Olympic stamps delayed |
According to a page 2 story, by Rick Miller, in the 15 December 2008 Linn’s Stamp News, Canada Post has delayed 10 stamps for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and Paralympics that were a late entry into the 2008 schedule, but were planned for release at this time. Canada Post’s Nicole Lemire admitted to Linn’s that five undenominated domestic letter rate Olympic Disciplines permanent first class stamps will now be issued on 12 January 2009. The new date is precisely one year prior to the opening of the Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Winter Olympics. Another five undenominated domestic letter rate stamps, featuring the Paralympic logos and Mascots, are now slated for release on 12 February 2009, a year to the day before the Paralympics begin. |

The stamps are being issued undenominated, with permanent first class letter rate values, because Canada Post’s proposed rate increase for the New Year was not approved in time by Canada’s government. The Canadian Minority Government suspended parliament early to avoid a non-confidence vote and the Olympic stamps appear to have been an unintended victim of these political machinations.
Olympic coins were also delayed during the latter part of 2008, with no reason given by the Mint. Most of the demand for Olympic material should be in the year prior to the games, and in the year following the games. Canada Post has announced their tentative 2009 stamp program as follows: January 12, Vancouver 2010 Olympic Disciplines, Queen Elizabeth II definitive. January ?, Year if the Ox, and Weddings, Anniversaries, and Birthdays February 12, Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Logos and Mascots. February ?, Black History Month—Abraham Doras Shadd and Rosemary Brown. |
