To quit or not to quit? That is the question. Many long term collectors feel now is the time to wrap up their collections. 1999 and 2000 were popular cutoff years. We suggest 2001 is a good year for Canadian collectors to extend their stamp collections to as this allows their collections to touch on a new century and mark 150 years of Canadian stamps. |

There is no question stamps are changing. The postal authorities are bringing too many issues to market. They seem to feel if one commemorative stamp is good, then four are better. Witness the endless variations of the recent R.C.M.P. and Millennium issues. This liberal issuing policy has been the straw that broke the camel's back. Hobbyists need not despair. There are still plenty of earlier issues to collect. Self adhesive stamps, while popular with the stamp using masses, are unpopular with collectors. Should we give up on the hobby altogether? Hell no. But if we are finding the modern mass market fodder too much to cope with, we can wind down our annual country collections and focus on thematic or topical interests. Like Shakespeare or Churchill? There are plenty of Shakespeare or Churchill stamps to ferret out. |

How about envelopes bearing the failed e-stamp issues? Coins too can now be collected along thematic lines. One of the local numismatic luminaries, having sold his coin holdings, has taken up a ship bearing coins thematic collection and is having as much fun as ever. Of course, internet access to a broader range of material allows us easier access to thematic issues. With thematic issues we are less constrained by convention and can truly make our subjects our own. What about those frame-style stamps you can order centers for? Why not make your own vignettes and start a collection of unused or postally used unique creations? |

| As the Royal Canadian Mint creates more denominations, such as the forthcoming collectible three cent coin, a Canadian coin type set gets more and more interesting. Before swearing off modern issues altogether we also recommend searching for contemporary used commemoratives. Nicely cancelled and properly used current stamp issues are getting more difficult than ever to find. Premium struck business use coins are no less easy to acquire. Fellow collectors, keep your eyes and minds open and your chins up as we tackle the Twenty First Century together. | ||
