Centuries ago, the Chinese invented a calendar based on the lunar, rather than the solar, cycle.
In 1998, Canada inaugurated a remarkable series of coins, designed by Harvey Chan, featuring the animal symbols of Chinese astrology based on the lunar calendar.
The first coin was the Year of the Tiger.
The coin is 40 mm in diameter and is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper and weighs 34 grams. The central cameo is plated with 24 carat gold.
Face value is $15, and it comes in a red velvet presentation case.
