2003 Special-Edition Land, Sea and Rail

This year, the popular Land, Sea and Rail Collection returns with special-edition coins that put the spotlight on transportation innovations of the 20th century.

The cameos on these special-edition coins feature something different.  They are now struck with an intricate sterling silver design.  The rest of the coin's surface is treated to an ultra-precise technique called selective gold plating, and the result is absolutely breathtaking.

The HMCS Bras d'or (FHE-400)
An ingenious water-gliding warship.

At the end of the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Navy knew it had to update its warships if it hoped to succeed in anti-submarine warfare.  Taking one of Alexander Graham Bell's clever inventions, researchers developed an innovative hydrofoil ship that could surf accross water at high speed to intercept any nuclear-powered submarine.  A change in defence policy forced the Bras d'or into retirement without ever having entered military service.

The Bricklin SV-1

A radical, safety-conscious sports car.

During the 1970s, Saint John, New Brunswick, was the automotive capital of the world as it began producing the gull-winged wonder known as the Bricklin .  Looking very much like Italy's Maserati (but at a fraction of the cost), the Bricklin promised to deliver performance and safety innovations that were years ahead of its time.  Plans were ambitious but short-lived - Bricklin Canada closed its doors after producing just 2,854 cars.
