Their bright and colourful Wing patterns are a marvel. And every summer, people around the world are witness to a fluttering art show as these natural works of art take flight. Antarctica is the only continent without butterflies.

Of the 24,000 species in the world. Canada is home to 297 of them, including the Silvery Blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus). There are about a dozen subspecies of Silvery Blue but only one of them is found in Canada, subspecies couperi. It occurs in every province and territory as far north as Tuktoyaktuk (Northwest Territories) but is rarely seen in southwestern Ontario. A single generation of Silvery Blue flies each season: from early May to early July in the south and from mid-June to mid-August in Newfoundland and the north.

With its stunning shiny blue wings. the Silvery Blue will turn anyone into a butterfly enthusiast. The edges feature a dark grey border which is usually wider in the Females and often infuses the entire surface of the wing with grey. The underside is grey throughout, with a single iow of round spots that are black with white rims.

The Coin

This sterling silver 50-cent coin contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. It has a weight of 9.30 grams and a diameter of 27.13 millimetres. Designed by Jianping Yan from the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin depicts a Silvery Blue flying along the shore. The obverse features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 by Susanna Blunt.
