2007 25¢ Red-breasted Nuthatch

25¢ Red-breasted NuthatchFeathered Climber

The Red-breasted Nuthatch is easily missed as it creeps along tree branches like a mouse, a behaviour one would not expect from a bird. It climbs down the tree trunk head first, searching for tiny organisms that were overlooked by other birds climing is an upright position.

The Nuthatch's large hind toe and stubby tail are likely adaptations for climbing upside-down, tghe toe providing additional stability and the short tail allowing it to maneuver through the branches.

A sturdy tapered beak also enables it to wedge nuts and seeds in crevases and to hammer them open later, a distinct behaviour that led to it's name.

Of the 17 Nuthatch species, 3 are found in Canada. The Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) is the most widely distributed and is readily identified by its eye stripes and rusty belly. It is a small, active bird with a diverse repertoir of calls, its nasal "yank-yank" call is usually heard before the bird is seen.

Designed by Canadian artist Arnold Nogy, the coin clearly shows the white eye stripes set against a black neck and head, features that set the Red-breasted Nuthatch apart from the other two Canadian species.
