2006 Colourized $5 Pure Silver Maple Leaf

2006 Colourized $5 Pure Silver Maple LeafThe annual Maple Leaf $5 pure silver coin this year is a bit confusing, as it depicts a Silver Maple.

In Canada, the Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum) occurs natually in parts of New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario and is planted as an ornamental street tree in many other parts of the country.

The Silver Maple is a fast growing deciduous tree reaching a height of 35 meters (100 ft) with an age of 100+ years.

Silver Maples often have hollow trunks, so that in addition to providing shade to urban streets, they also offer shelter to racoons and squirrels. Often found near streams and lakeshores, Silver Maples also provide nesting places to Wood Ducks and other birds.

Silver Maples are the first maples to bloom, as early as late February, and produces the heaviest fall of the familiar double-winged seed. In the Fall, the leaves turn a lovely muted yellow, shown here.

The coin is certified to be 31.39 grams of 99.999% pure silver, with a nominal face value of $5. Designed by Stan Witten. Only 20,000 are produced and they sell out quickly. No previous years are available.
